Whatever the Earth Wants to Do

Snapping twigs, twisting
a metal spike into a tree

The sky looks alien
somehow from a different planet

Still I chew a spike of grass

What is it that leaves
and returns again –

Why do the dreams seem
so innumerable

As if every cell had a use
was meant to paint a picture,
exist outside of time
